Top 25 Most Powerful Web Directories List
Top 25 Most Powerful Web Directories List
Share
Traduction francaise: Liste des 25 Répertoires les Plus Puissants sur la Toile
So after getting a fair amount of feedback on my last series I decided it was finally time to offer a "Top 25 Most Powerful Web Directories" list. Now this comprehensive web directories list isn't set in stone, and will probably need to be updated on 3-month intervals, but it does cover a good majority of the top paid directories you should initially target to submit your site(s) too.
Now I don't usually offer such specific details on link building resources; personally I prefer to provide general tips and then let the viewer read between the lines and extract my key points, but in this case I just felt that I should provide a quick and powerful directory list to follow up my three part series on directory submissions. Only seems fitting. And with the potential power of directories for SEO currently in hot debate, I thought that it was the right time to unleash this list. (For the record; yes they are still powerful!)
Now, there are a lot of great directories that aren't on this list because they are either too expensive for my blood (BOTW, Yahoo! Directory) or it just takes way too long to get approved (DMOZ, Illumirate) when you're looking for a quick boost for your site(s). So without much further ado, here is a list of the top 25 most powerful directories:
1.) Family Friendly Sites
2.) Incrawler
3.) Kahuki
4.) Greenstalk
5.) Rakcha
6.) Joeant
7.) Splash Directory
8.) Goguides
9.) Enquira
10.) ALS Links
11.) Clush
12.) Octopedia
13.) Info Listings
14.) Skaffe
15.) Global Weblinks
16.) Links 2 Go
17.) Dmoz Zilla
18.) Gimpsy
19.) Global Link Networks
20.) Business Directory
21.) Zorg Directory
22.) TWD
23.) Data Spear
24.) World Site Index
25.) Most Popular Sites

Digital UK - TV Explained
Digital UK - TV Explained: "Television signals can be received via an aerial, satellite, cable or broadband connection. Switchover affects any TV that receives its signal from an aerial.
If you use an aerial, it will receive its signal from a transmitter. In the UK, there are more than 1,150 transmitters organised into around 80 transmitter groups that will switch to digital one by one. Each group has a main switchover transmitter and local relay transmitters.
Before switchover, local relay transmitters are only able to transmit an analogue TV signal. After switchover, for the first time, local relay transmitters will transmit a digital signal and increase the number of channels available from around 5 to around 15.
Why is it important that I understand which transmitter I am watching?"

* A business owner looking to expand your company's web presence and reach more potential customers
* A marketing strategist seeking another way to promote your clients on the web
* A community manager interacting with the people who've gathered around your brand or cause
A weblog is easy to update and easy to read. Blogging software such as WordPress or MovableType makes it a snap for an author to create and manage content, and to update the blog frequently -- even multiple times a day -- without any help from a webmaster."

Using Facebook and Twitter for Your Business - AboutUs Wiki Page
Using Facebook and Twitter for Your Business - AboutUs Wiki Page: "Many business owners are adding Facebook and Twitter to their marketing toolkits because they are free, reasonably easy to learn, and don't require much time. They can be simple and effective ways to promote your business, engage your current customers and win new ones.
Social media marketing is also growing fast, as more people from all walks of life jump into social networks. Facebook is the second most-visited site on the web, with a member count that's higher than the population of the United States.
Twitter, initially popular among tech-savvy professionals, is also growing rapidly. According to a February 2010 study, 41 percent of Americans use Facebook regularly, and 7 percent use Twitter.
For the owner of a small business, Facebook and Twitter can be powerful. Each offers a place where you can build a fan base and communicate directly with your fans -- and, by the way, anyone else who's looking at your postings."

URL Rewrites & Redirects: The Gory Details (Part 1 of 2)
URL Rewrites & Redirects: The Gory Details (Part 1 of 2): "The three types of URL rewrites
Rewriting of search engine sub-optimal URLs can be accomplished through three approaches. The first of which – using a “URL rewriting” server module/plugin such as mod_rewrite for Apache or ISAPI_Rewrite for Microsoft IIS Server – is the most popular. If you can’t use a URL rewriting module on your server, you might recode your scripts to extract variables out of the “path_info” part of the URL instead of the “query_string”. An example of this might look like http://www.example.com/index.php/category/widgets.
With either approach, you’d want to replace all occurrences of your old URLs in links on your site with your new search-friendly URLs. Additionally, you may wish to 301 redirect the old URLs to the new ones, but this is apparently optional with the advent of the canonical tag. The third approach would be to use a proxy server based solution (e.g. GravityStream) that eliminates the need to recode your site or re-architect your CMS/e-commerce platform. This can be useful when IT department involvement with SEO projects must be minimized, for whatever reason."

TheWikiWay:LinkAsYouThink - AboutUs Wiki Page: "CamelCase is a writing convention in which words are combined by taking out the spacing in between and capitalizing the first letter of each word, such as CamelCase. The name is derived from the idea of the capital letters being reminiscent of humps on a camel's back. The CamelCase convention is used in computer systems in which naming requires words to be contiguous. With CamelCase, words are readily distinguished and names more easily read.
CamelCase provides a direct link in the world of Google. Within a few weeks of working on a page that is CamelCased it will return as the first hit.
A criticism of CamelCase is that it's hard for non-native English speakers to understand where one word ends and another begins. However, the idea is that CamelCase creates a unique WikiWord that describes an idea/thought or action.
In the original concept of CamelCase, one less key stroke makes a HyperText link - it is easier to link while you think - LinkLanguage for a HyperText internet.

Can you hear that? It’s the sound of war. Better choose your side soon, too. The tablet wars are going to get nasty.
Apple’s army is prepped, already backed by over 3 million zealous iPad owners. But the Google Android horde is quickly banding together and will soon offer countless weapons from several major CE houses and dozens of smaller camps. Google is also quietly forming the stealthy Chrome OS platoon that will likely enter the battle a bit late, but shouldn’t be forgotten, ether.
Then there’s the suit & tie brigade with their trusty BlackBerry holstered on their hips, ready to be tethered to the coming BlackPad. Don’t forget about the wildcard: The HP-produced, webOS-powered PalmPad no doubt has a couple of tricks, enough to put up a decent fight. Then there’s the battle-tested Windows that might still be able to fire a few direct shots.
The tablet wars are coming and not everyone is going to survive. There simply isn’t enough market share to support the five or more upcoming tablet platforms."

The Web Value Investor Comparing Godaddy’s and NetSol’s price tags
The Web Value Investor Comparing Godaddy’s and NetSol’s price tags: "In Godaddy’s case, we have a Registrar that in 2005 was doing about 137M a year in revenues. They filed this S1 back then to raise 200M in an IPO which was then called off. 84 Million of those revenues came from domain registrations. Godaddy retails domains around $8 or $9, so $6 goes to Verisign, putting their COGS on the domains around 75%. That’s the thing with domain registrars that play the margin game (even wholesalers like my favorite Tucows): the gross margins on the domains aren’t that great (especially compared to the registry side of things), so those registrars need to make it up in add-ons. In Godaddy’s case that means web hosting, email, SSL certs, et al.
While the original S1 showed Godaddy was actually losing money. I don’t have the figures handy to see how many domains they had under management in 2005, I imagine they’re a lot larger now than they were then. I also suspect that they are also benefiting greatly from monetizing their domain expiries, a la Tucows."

Authorizing a Domain Transfer to Your Account
Your domain transfer will not succeed unless you unlock the domain, remove privacy, set up a
valid administrative email, and apply the correct authorization code(for domain names that
require one).
To Authorize a Domain Transfer to Your Account
1. Log in to your Account Manager.
2. In the My Products section, click Manage Domains. The Domain Manager displays.
3. From the Domains menu, select Pending Transfers.
4. Click the Authorization button, and then click Begin Transfer Authorization.
5. In the Transaction ID field, enter the transaction ID from the email notification we sent
regarding the domain transfer, and then click Next.
6. In the Security Code field, enter the security code from the email notification we sent
regarding the domain transfer, and then click Next.
7. If applicable, enter the Authorization Code that you received from the current Registrar
and click Continue.
Troubleshooting Domain Transfers
· Authorization Code (Auth Code) For
domains that require one, the customer must obtain
an Auth Code for the transfer from the losing Registrar and enter it in the transfer
confirmation page. (For information on Authorization Codes see page 2.)
· Awaiting Response The
gaining Registrar must receive a response from the Administrative
(Admin) Contact within 30 days. If you have not received a confirmation email, verify that
the Admin email address is valid. (See an example confirmation email on page 3.)
· Failed Transfer The
domain is locked, expired, or was registered or renewed within the
last 60 days and therefore cannot be transferred at this time. If your domain is locked, you
must contact your current registrar to unlock it before the transfer can be completed.
· No Response / Late Response The
losing Registrar must receive a response to the transfer
confirmation email within their allotted timeframe.
For more information about transferring domains or authorization codes, please visit our Help
Center or contact the Customer Support department.
